I do very few styled shoots as firstly I don’t have much down time during the year and I only like to do these things if they are ‘different’ from the type of thing I do weekly. In the past I have shot a Trash The Dress and Bridal Boudoir shoots as nobody I know has covered these. I have built a great friendship with Cassie, of Cassie M Bridal, over the last few years. We have worked together on many weddings but during wedding fayres we laugh and have great fun. Cassie has been incredibly supportive of me during lockdown and I photographed all her brand-new hair accessories for her new venture. In passing I told Cassie that a venue I have always wanted to photograph at was Portmeirion and unbeknown to myself she arranged it!
We started a Pinterest board of colourful wedding photographs. Portmeirion were happy for us to shoot outdoors and with it being a venue open to the public we decided to keep it as simple as possible with the pandemic causing more restrictions. On our search for inspiration we came across a bicycle with a basket of flowers on the front…. I was obsessed!
The lovey lady who makes my nails pretty each month lent me a ladies bike with a basket on the front and we asked the very talented Dawn from The Very Nice Flower Company to ‘do her thing’ with it. She absolutely did not disappoint!
Then we needed a couple who had great body language, were super fun and up for a giggle… In June 2018 I photographed a local couple’s wedding here in Prestatyn. Vanessa is naturally beautiful, has a great smile and laugh and was a joy to shoot on her big day. Her husband Gary is tall with a magnificent beard and an amazing presence, so they were my first choice.
So, off we went to Portmeirion on a sunny busy Saturday in September. James of Woodpecker Films also joined us. What a location! It did not disappoint. We were armed with a gorgeous ¾ length dress from Karen Lesley Bridal and two suits from Attire Menswear as well as Gary’s own more casual outfit for some crazy bike shots!
It is safe to say we caused a stir with our couple, the cameras, the drone, the confetti canon, smoke bombs and the flower laden bicycle. We explored the whole village and captured some amazing shots. I think one of my personal favourites was Gary flying along the cobbled lane on the bike, legs out and a massive smile on his face. We had a few takes purely for the giggle factor.
All in all, an amazing day with a fantastic bunch of fun suppliers. It was more like a day off with friends than work. Social distancing and face masks did not stop us having a fantastic day out capturing some lovely images.
